Challenge
Essity’s packaging artwork and approval processes relied heavily on manual coordination. Information came from multiple sources, making it difficult to know whether files had been validated or were ready for production. Errors were often discovered only after packaging had reached production, resulting in rework, delays, and unnecessary costs.
The approval process itself reflected these challenges. Artwork was printed in large format with a paper checklist attached, then physically moved from office to office collecting signatures. If someone wasn’t available to review it, the entire process stalled, creating bottlenecks that slowed packaging development.
As more stakeholders became involved, collaboration became increasingly difficult to manage.
Solution
To modernize its packaging workflow, Essity implemented Esko WebCenter to centralize artwork management and streamline review and approval processes. The platform provided a structured, digital workflow that made review cycles easier to manage while giving teams greater confidence that they were working with validated information.
As part of its broader digital transformation, Essity used WebCenter to replace manual coordination with a connected digital workflow, making it easier for teams to collaborate while maintaining visibility throughout the packaging development process.
With WebCenter, it’s basically the same process, but digitally.
Results
With WebCenter, Essity improved collaboration across teams, reduced manual handling, and standardized packaging processes across multiple countries. The company streamlined review cycles, minimized errors, and improved the speed and reliability of packaging development.
The implementation also enabled local teams to become internal trainers, helping support the rollout of standardized packaging workflows across additional markets.
Looking Ahead
Essity continues to expand its digital packaging ecosystem by exploring additional Esko solutions, including Studio and Cape Pack, to further connect packaging design, approval, and production processes.
The company’s long-term vision is a more integrated workflow that reduces manual validation, supports regulatory requirements, and enables continuous process improvement.
