GS1 ratifies new content standard for packaging artwork

Graphics, logos, barcodes, ingredient information, formulae and marketing slogans… They are an intricate part of a great deal of packaging.

These graphical and text elements frequently pass between different people (designers, the legal department, prepress professionals…) before ending up on a label or on a package. 

This creates a very complex, and hard to manage, environment that involves a lot of manual copy and paste work.

The alternative for manual copy/paste actions would be a standard way of communicating packaging content. This standard way of working shortens design time, improves quality and efficiency. This is what the GS1 Collaborative Packaging Artwork Solution aims to achieve.





About the GS1 Collaborative Packaging Artwork Solution

Working closely with leading brands, artwork studios and GS1, Esko took a leading role in the development of the new global GS1 XML standard. This is a standard XML-based language and process for efficient and error-free communication between brands and artwork studios.

With Dynamic Content, an Esko plug-in for Adobe Illustrator, the XML-structured data can be assigned to placeholders in a master packaging design. This reduces the risk that an operator makes an error dramatically.

To create the xml content in this standard format, brand owners can download the BMS (Business Message Standard) “Artwork Content and Response” from the GS1 website.
