Version 12.0 - Esko

These are the minimum requirements for reasonable performance of the described products. They will help you decide whether the equipment you are currently using remains viable. If you are considering new equipment, bear in mind that these requirements are minimum, not optimal. Exceeding these specifications will in general lead to enhanced performance.

Note that Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks is officially supported from Suite 12 Assembly 5, release date: end January 2014. This applies to the following Esko software packages running on OS X: Automation Engine Pilot, DeskPack, Studio, ArtPro, i-cut Preflight, Neo …
In case the customer has upgraded their Macs to Mavericks, there is a License Manager hotfix available for Suite 12 Assembly 4: https://wiki.esko.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=78613702
From the first week of January 2014 onwards, customer can download the installers for all Interactive applications v12.1.2,  i-cut Layout and i-cut Preflight v12.1 (Assembly 5) on https://mysoftware.esko.com


Note that installing and using Esko software on a Terminal Services or Remote Desktop Services server (Microsoft, Citrix,…) is not supported.
Note that using Esko software with local licenses when launched via Remote Desktop is not supported.
Note that Windows Server 2012 Standard and Datacenter are supported from Suite 12.1.1 (Assembly 4). This depends on the Product. Therefore, check the specific product system requirements. Windows Server 2012 Essentials and Foundation are not supported.

System Requirements for WebCenter 12 and higher versions

 

Web Server

 

  • CPU: an x86-32 or x86-64 compatible processor (Intel or AMD), minimal 2 cores, recommended 8 cores
  • Memory: Minimum: 4GB Recommended: 6GB
  • Harddisk: An NTFS volume is required. The software takes about 1GB of disk space. A backup solution is strongly advised.
  • Network: 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet, TCP/IP v4 protocol, TCP/IP v6 protocol
  • Video Card: Minimum 1280 x 1024 resolution, true color depth
  • CD/DVD: DVD-ROM drive
  • OS: Windows Server 2008 (32 & 64 bit) (Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter)

Application Server and Database Server

 

  • CPU: an x86-32 or x86-64 compatible processor (Intel or AMD), minimal 2 cores, recommended 8 cores
  • Memory: Minimum 6GB RAM, recommended 8 GB RAM
  • Harddisk: An NTFS volume is required. The software takes about 5GB of disk space:

    - Application Server with on-board graphics engine: 2 GB

    - Database Server: 2 GB

If production data will be stored on the application server (local FileStore), then 100GB is the minimum needed space, it should be expandable as data storage grows with usage. A data backup solution is a must.

  • Supported databases:
    SQL Server 2005(Express Edition, Workgroup Edition, Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition),
    SQL Server 2008 (Workgroup Edition, Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition),
    SQL Server 2008 R2 (Express Edition(SP1), Workgroup Edition, Standard Edition, Enterprise Edition)..
    Oracle database 10g , 11g
    Please make sure that the database is compatible with the OS you're installing on.

Recommended:  SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition

  • Network: 10/100/1000 Base-T Ethernet, TCP/IP v4 protocol, TCP/IP v6 protocol is not tested.
  • Video Card: Minimum 1280 x 1024 resolution, true color depth
  • CD/DVD: DVD-ROM drive

 

Scaling Recommended system requirements

The section below provides a recommendation on the infrastructure for difference configuration commonly used in the filed. WebCenter can be scaled up to 200 concurrent users in single installation. These limits are set based on our flied experience and internal lab test. This limit will be changed to higher number as in when we learn more

The recommended specification Web server should work well up to 40 to 50 concurrent users. Beyond that you might consider adding more memory and additional cores and moving both Data Base and OBGE to different machines. Rule of thumb is 1 core and 2GB RAM for every 40 extra concurrent users. High speed hard drives (both throughput and seek time; e.g SSD) will work beneficial, but are not a requirement. Write speed should not be traded off for read performance as both are of importance to the application.

The DB system should have 2 cores and 2 GB memory per 40 users (and an RDMS that supports it). In general, the higher read and write speed are and the lower seek time is, the better everything will work.  For very large installations, having the transaction log, temporary DB and actual DB each siting on an individual SSD can be considered.

The OBGE system should have 1 core and 2 GB of memory per view preparation process. It is possible to run multiple preview generation process in parallel if that is enabled in your configuration.

For the Application server system, about 8 GB of memory is likely to suffice for concurrent users up to 40 to 50. For additional users, the rule of thumb is 2 cores & 2GB for every 40 extra concurrent users. High speed hard drives (both throughput and seek time) will also work beneficial, but are not a requirement. Write speed should not be traded of for read performance as both are of importance to the application. Try to avoid large seek times (e.g. due to NAS/SAN), also for the FileStore, as this will make performance degrade quickly.

Port configurations

Below you can find the ports which need to be open/available for proper functioning of WebCenter:

–     Port 80 (HTTP) from the internet to the WebCenter webserver (DMZ)

–     Port 443 (HTTPS) from the internet to the WebCenter webserver (DMZ)

–     Port 80 (HTTP) from the LAN to the WebCenter webserver (DMZ)

–     Port 443 (HTTPS) from the LAN to the WebCenter webserver (DMZ)

–     Port 1099 (JBOSS Naming Service) from the WebCenter webserver (DMZ) to the WebCenter appserver (LAN)

–     Port 2500 (JBOSS Naming Service RMI) from the WebCenter webserver (DMZ) to the WebCenter appserver (LAN)

–     Port 4444 (RMI/JRMP invoker object) from the WebCenter webserver (DMZ) to the WebCenter appserver (LAN)

–     Port 3873 (EJB3) from the WebCenter webserver (DMZ) to the WebCenter appserver (LAN)

–     Port 25 (SMTP) from the WebCenter appserver (LAN) to the mailserver

In case you need approval feedback to an Automation Engine outside the LAN in which the WebCenter application server resides, you need to open Port 8010 from the internet to the WebServer.

Finally, JBOSS needs following ports on the application server. These ports are only accessed from the application server (so calling itself) and don’t need to be configured on the firewalls. However, if any of these ports are taken by another application, JBOSS will fail using them which can expose problems from failing to start or failing to execute certain functions.

Ports: 8083, 8086, 4446, 3528, 1161, 1162, 1090, 1091.

Automation Engine calls on port 5445 of the application server to get approval feedback in case both are in the same LAN.

 

 


 

 

 

WebCenter Client

 

  • Operating System: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 2008, Macintosh OSX 2 or better
  • Microsoft Windows Clients: Internet Explorer 6.0 or better or Mozilla FireFox 3 or better
  • Macintosh clients: Safari 4 or better 
  • Recommended client Java version is the latest available version.
  • To view 3D VRML and 3D VRML animations, a VRML browser plugin is required such as the Cortona plug-in from Parallel Graphics.

To run the Collada 3D Viewer the recommended system requirements are as follows:

For PC

Memory: Minimum 1GB RAM, recommended 4GB RAM

Java: Java 1.5 or higher

Video Card: DirectX9 compatible 3D graphics board from ATI or NVidia

supporting fragment shaders and with at least 128MB video memory.

General Remarks & Requirements

  • The configuration described here is for dedicated servers. The configuration can be based on cloud (virtual) of comparable configuration.
  • Virtualization : VMware ESX (version 3, 3.5, 4, 4.1 and 5) and Microsoft Hyper-V are supported. 
    Note that hardware connections, including dongles, proofers, spectrophotometers and others may work, but are not supported. Customers should verify hardware support through their virtualization support channels.
  • Compatibility: If you intend to run other applications as well on this hardware, make sure to check compatibility with the specifications of all other applications as well
  • Remote Support: Esko Customer Support is using TeamViewer as a solution for remote access and support over the Internet, it can be downloaded from http://www.teamviewer.com/download/index.aspx

 

Notes 

  1. Although we don't expect issues with Microsoft OS patches, Esko only guarantees support on the official MS Service Pack (SP)level, not on individual OS patches. PC's for Esko applications (editors, rips or servers) must not be configured as WebServers (IIS), Network Domain Controllers (Active Directory), DNS Server, DHCP Server, WINS Server, SQL Server,  or MailServer. The Automation Engine Server is allowed to be a Member Server in a Windows Active Directory domain. However, Esko can not test all possible configurations. Contact your regional Customer Service Center in case of specific questions.
  2. Microsoft Windows Server Client Access Licenses: Make sure to purchase enough CAL's as required by the workflow (client PC, client Mac, Rip, Data server, etc...).
  3. The Automation Engine server and it's Assistant server should be dedicated Computers, no other software (both Esko (eg: FlexRip, FlexProof) and non-Esko) shall run on this machine.
  4. A single processor with hyperthreading enabled is considered as 2 processors for memory calculations. A dual core processor is considered as 2 processors for memory calculations.
  5. Esko software will only work with properly licensed versions of operating systems and other software. Esko is not responsible for any loss of functionality due to use with unlicensed software. Esko will not provide assistance in installing software on equipment lacking properly licensed software.
