Pioneers in digital printing and converting

The Hein siblings, Stephan, Christian and Friederike, are the 4th generation of a family boasting a long tradition of entrepreneurship.

Founded in 1978 Hein Verpackungen specialized in heavy duty industrial packaging from corrugated board.

In 1992 Christian, Stephan and Friederike stepped in, offering customers bespoke products and services in the display and packaging sector.

Most of the company’s 80 employees work at the main plant in Traunfeld in Germany. The spacious 7,000 m² premises are located a 40 minute drive east of Nuremberg.

Because we don´t need a cutting die thanks to our Kongsberg tables, we can deliver short to medium run full color printed displays extremely quickly. We came to the conclusion that this is what the market expects.

The challenge

Fast moving market with smaller batches

Facing an increasingly challenging market, with customers demanding smaller batches of specialist items rather than very large runs, Hein Verpackungen decided to invest in automation early on.

With automated loading and unloading, the Kongsberg XP Auto can operate unattended for hours.

The Solution

Lean production

On the production process side of things Hein Verpackungen embraced automation ahead of competition. No less than four Kongsberg cutting tables are the mainstay of the company’s Traunfeld plant!

The Kongsberg XP Auto is a fully automatic finishing table with automatic tool calibration and camera option for accurate print-to-cut.

We use our Esko Kongsberg tables for display and packaging runs between 500 and a maximum of 1,500 pieces nowadays. Our customers tend to demand smaller batches of specialist items rather than very large runs.

The Benefits

Unattended night shifts

Christian Hein is particularly impressed with the Kongsberg’s automation options. With automated loading and unloading, the Kongsberg XP Auto can operate unattended for hours. This is important because Hein Verpackungen GmbH works in a single shift operation and this ensures that longer runs can safely be cut overnight with no operator in attendance.

Software and workflow integration are the next aspects we need to – and will – be investing in,” Christian Hein concluded.
