Delhi (India), April 2016 – Godfrey Philips India (GPI), has set up its own Innovative Packaging Centre (Ipac) near Delhi for the in-house development of packaging for its tobacco, food, and personal care segments. The prime objective of the Ipac is to undertake activities related to packaging innovations and to offer solutions to the brand and project teams who are working under GPI’s product verticals such as cigarettes, chewing products and tea.
Head of Ipac, Sachin Sharma states, “The whole focus is on expediting artwork development, prototyping and to work on completely new designs for products to improve consumer’s perception of the GPI brands. The statutory and legal requirements, and the framework we need to comply with, makes it important for an organization to have its in-house packaging development facility. Ipac will help improve the packaging design and performance of not only our pan-India operations but even the international businesses of GPI.”
Sharad Aggarwal, Executive Vice President of Operations of Godfrey Philips India, says that the requirement of Ipac was felt for a long time because working through various agencies can make the process of designing and developing new or existing packaging a bit tedious and sometimes slow. “We wanted to cut down on time as well as reduce costs. Also we wanted to experiment with a lot of new materials. This is a significant investment from our side and although we are at a nascent stage, we really hope to gain a lot in the long term.”
The Ipac center has invested in and adopted Esko’s software solutions and workflows for its packaging development and design operations. Esko’s ArtiosCAD, Studio Toolkit, Visualizer and Cape software are used. Structural designs for new and existing packs are created in ArtiosCAD whereas Studio Toolkit is creating complete 3D packaging in software that can be further tested in a virtual 3D environment such as a shop or supermarket.
Esko’s Studio Visualizer software can be used to visualize a large variety of print effects and design styles and materials even before the product goes to the conversion stage. Sharma says, “Esko’s ArtiosCAD is one such software which has helped us in developing key line designs (KLD), proper artwork as well as 3D modeling for virtual and physical mock-ups. The Studio Toolkit and the Visualizer are helping us significantly in reducing the time from the development to the prototype stage.”
Sharma adds that the new GPI Ipac has received strong application and training support from Esko. He says, “I have visited Esko’s design center and office in Bengaluru and it is a fantastic place.
