Alpha & Beta software disclaimer

Before a software product gets released to the public, it must first be thoroughly tested for bugs (programming errors).

What is an alpha?

Firstly, alpha testing will occur internally or at a customer site. Alpha testing is the software prototype stage when the software is first able to run. Alpha versions will not have all the intended functionality, it may have modules or components missing, but it will have core functions and will be able to accept inputs and generate outputs. In-depth software reliability testing, installation testing, and documentation testing are not done at alpha test time, as the software is only a prototype. Alpha software should never be used for other than demonstrations and (elementary) testing.

What is a beta?

A beta is an almost final release of the product, but with a few bugs that may still need fixing. Beta versions are made available to internal users (developers, QA?) and to (selected) real users. Beta versions are used to put the product through real-world tests and to ferret out bugs before the finished software hits the shelves. Beta software may expire after a period of time, e.g. when the full version or the next beta is released.

A Beta Tester is expected to note any errors they find with the product, how they caused it, and what happened, so the developer can reproduce this and then fix it. You can use the contact form to send us any eventualities you may find in the beta software.

Should I use an alpha or beta?

If you are not an advanced user, and don't know your way around computers, an alpha or beta release is not for you. Also if you are not prepared to report errors, an alpha or beta release is not for you. We will not offer usual support for an alpha or beta, until it's a final release. Esko disclaims all liability for any defects in the software and for any loss of revenue that may be caused by the use of alpha or beta software.
